Composting

Domestic composting is one of the ways in which the quantity of waste matters sent to landfills can be reduced.  Approximately 40% of domestic wastes actually sent to landfills could be composted!

The composting of these organic matters contributes to decrease effectively the collective cost of management, collection and transport of waste matters while protecting the environment.  Furthermore, the compost which results from it can be used advantageously on your lawn, in your flowers or in the vegetable garden.  It constitutes an excellent natural fertilizer.  The citizens of Val-David are encouraged to make composting.

The method is simple but the means will be chosen according to the available space, to the time you wish to dedicate it and if you wish to obtain more or less fast results.  Useful documents and links are proposed hereafter to guide you.

Besides, the composting has to be made in the respect for specific municipal regulation:

  1. The composting of vegetable organic matters must be made within an appliance or fenced area intended to this end;
  2. Appliance must be situated in the backyard and at least at one (1) meter of any limit of lot;
  3. The vegetable organic matters, composted or not, must be deposited in a way so that there is no water of streaming pouring outside of the limits of the lot;
  4. The appliance and the space intended for the composting must be maintained so as to avoid nauseous smells.
